Queen Maria Theresa created the palace complex. The Neptune Fountain in Maria Theresa's gardens The 18th century gardens are still used for concerts and celebrations. The Gloriette crowns a 60m / 200 ft hill. Maria Theresa's Tiergarten is the world's oldest zoo. The Palm House pavilions were added in 1881-82. SALZBURG has one of the best-preserved city centres north of the Alps. Mirabell Palace, from 1606 Mozart was born and raised in Salzburg. Salzburg Cathedral, site of Mozart's baptism Fortress Hohensalzburg can be reached by funicular. The fortress was begun in 1077. The hilltop location allowed control of a wide region. Hellbrunn Palace, built by a Prince-Archbishop in 1613-19 MELK ABBEY overlooks the Danube River in Melk. The Benedictine abbey was founded in 1089. Today's Baroque abbey was built 1702 - 1736. The monastery church is noted for its frescoes.
